My story

My name translates my story to date. As Alex Shufflebottom I spent over 25 years running and growing a family-owned and family-run award-winning construction and manufacturing business (Shufflebottom Ltd) which achieved a highly-respected reputation across the UK and beyond. The business was in my blood, and I know first-hand the context of leading businesses through times of significant challenge and change. I understand how to be agile and adaptable in order to drive growth, profitability and innovation. I have lived through the tough decisions, the long hours, and occasional feelings of isolation.

My career highlights

Starting as a buyer, I worked through every part of the family business from operations and finance to HR and health & safety – eventually becoming Managing Director of a £25+ million turnover company. I’ve led growth, managed major investments, steered acquisitions, and guided the business through change and succession planning, culminating in a successful sale. I am proud of my legacy.

A new chapter

Now, I am excited to share my business experience and strengths with other businesses and work in tandem as a fearless friend. I am proud to put my name to my business. My brand (ASJ) is a translation of me and my career development: the current sum of my parts.

Today, I mentor and advise business owners, helping them gain perspective, make confident decisions, and grow businesses without feeling alone. Whether it’s a family business, SME, or organisation navigating change, I offer honest, practical support and guidance to bring about positive development.

This much respected affiliation enables me to sharpen my practice, build credibility, and most importantly, create and communicate tangible outcomes for the businesses I support.

I was delighted to contribute to a recent event at the Senedd (hosted by the British Constructional Steelwork Association), where industry leaders, apprentices, and policymakers gathered to celebrate the heritage and future of the Welsh steel sector. Discussions focused on the steelwork industry, which is worth approximately £1.6 billion per year and employs around 60,000 people across the UK.

As an established business leader, I was excited to speak at the recent flagship International Women’s Day event, Partners in Progress: Give to Gain, focused on inclusive leadership, collaboration and regional opportunity.

Delivered by IoD Wales with support from Bluestone National Park Resort and Welsh Government, the event brought together established leaders and future talent to explore how sharing time, insight and opportunity can help unlock economic growth.
